HCRS Hosts Disability Mentoring Day Print

HCRS recently co-hosted a Disability Mentoring Day on October 21 as part of their Supported Employment Program for clients with mental or physical disabilities. Disability Mentoring Day is a nationwide event, which began in 2000, to expose clients with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities to careers within their community. The day also increases awareness amongst employers of the skills and abilities of those with disabilities who are involved with HCRS’ supported employment program as well as the many other vocational programs offered in the local area.

The day was truly a success with events held in Springfield, Bellows Falls, and Brattleboro. Hugh Bradshaw from the Vermont Department of Vocational Rehabilitation spoke at the Springfield event about the many benefits of hiring disabled workers and how agencies like HCRS as well as Vocational Rehabilitation can support employers in employing these individuals.

A recognition ceremony was held to honor several local employers who work closely with the HCRS employment programs to recognize their dedication and support in meeting the needs of their employees.

Overall a total of 57 HCRS clients were able to participate in site visits to area employers, many of whom were able to gain some actual hands-on experience.
