HCRS Clients Attend Disability Awareness Day

On March 18, individuals from all over Vermont met at the State House in Montpelier to celebrate and advocate for their rights on Vermont Disability Awareness Day. The event was hosted by the Vermont Coalition for Disability Rights and featured workshops, a keynote by Andrew Imparato, Executive Director of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities, as well as panel presentations on the Americans with Disabilities Act and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

Two clients from HCRS participated in the event. John and Zach met with Governor Peter Shumlin and heard him speak on the importance of their supports and the advocacy work they do in our communities. John and Zach are also members of the HCRS Developmental Services’ advocacy group which ensures that client’s voices are heard.

John and Zach enjoyed meeting new peers and speaking with various legislators at the event. As Zach said, “it was really cool getting to meet our Governor and to speak with the people who live in the same area that we do.”
